How To Celebrate Twenty?

Today is my 20th wedding anniversary!

On a picture-perfect blue sky day Jeff and I tied the knot amid family, friends and a riot of blooming rhodies, wisteria and azaleas at the Washington Arboretum Graham Visitor Center.

Look how young we looked!

A wonderful goldsmith designed our beautiful loon rings based on a sketch we gave them

After we exchanged our loon rings we danced on the cobblestone patio to a wonderful band headed by our friend, Scott Law.

The whole affair was relaxed, fun and festive. Just think, 20 years ago I was instinctively living by the Delight Detective’s credo of Yes and Yay!

(Ah-ha! Another clue that my past informs the future!)

What a magical kick-off to a two-decade ride of love, humor, art, creativity, music and adventure with my best friend Jeff.

So then,  how shall we celebrate our twenty years of marriage?

I learned from the folks at Hallmark that platinum and china are the traditional anniversary gifts.   Do we exchange new rings? Take an elaborate vacation? Shower of rose petals maybe? All nice gestures and celebrations, but not our style.

Yes we’re romantic saps about lots of stuff.  But we really do think that every day together is the best gift of all and a reason to celebrate. So tomorrow will feel like many other days around Yes and Yay HQ:

We’re having breakfast at one of our favorite cafes, then will come back and putter in the garden, and work a bit.  We’ll re-arrange some of the giant letters from our Alphabet Garden to match our celebration!

I’ll spend an hour in my studio noodling with my newest quilt, which I started yesterday in honor of our 20 year milestone.  Here’s  a first peek at the central block:

Then later on, we’ll cook dinner together and sit out on the deck if the weather is fine, and watch the stars come out.  And we’ll do our little happy dance of gratitude, minus the cobblestones, tux and fancy white dress.

For us, it’s the perfect way to celebrate our friendship, doing what we love to do, together.

Wishing you all a day full of love and whimsy and delight,

Frances

From Ho-Hum to Holy Smokes! Alphabet Garden Spells Delight at Yes and Yay HQ

Things are getting a little large at Yes and Yay HQ.

It all started 2 years ago when Jeff tore down a small A-frame shed in our yard;

The Humble Pointy Shed We Inherited

and extracted the large “A” from the frame to create a letter.

Jeff' created a giant A from the A-Frame of our shed

Soon he was rummaging around his shop to make a giant “T” out of lumber scraps, and then into the woods to find branches to make a curvy “R”.

At the time we were in major house demo mode and we joked that soon, only ART would remain!

It’s funny how our jokes often inform (or in this case, predict) our reality!

A year zipped by and we’d been staring at a vast expanse of our ho-hum fence in a ho-hum area of our yard.  The one bright spot?  Our cheeky letters that spell ART.

The first word we created was ART

And then one summer day, a dear friend invited us to play Scrabble on her giant patio set….

Playing giant Scrabble with friends

….and the big letter tiles sparked Jeff’s imagination….

These big Scrabble letters sparked an idea!

“What if”, he mused, “we make a giant alphabet for our ho-hum fence?”

I laughed and said – YES!

Jeff took that spark of an idea and fanned it into a spontaneous combustion of letter making, using all manner of old and discarded materials around the house.

Paint on wood?  Sure!  Paint on old glass windows? Why not!  Paint on galvanized metal scraps?  A-OK!  Bottle caps on wood plus paint?  Absolutely!  Metal roofing scraps?  Fine!  How about squiggly HVAC ducting for a Y?

Yes oh Yes!

Our alphabet garden has grown into a robust collection of letters (and an punctuation marks) that we rearrange for our amusement and delight.  Here’s what we did for the holidays:

Yes and Yay Alphabet Garden Spells Happy

 Alphabet-Garden-Spells-Time

Alphabet-Garden-Spells-Season

You’ll be seeing a lot more of our alphabet garden since we’re quite fond of words – lots of them!

Big Letters on Our Fence spell "Happy Time Season" for the holidays

How do you spell delight?

What random materials are in your closet, on your desk, up on a shelf, under your bed and in your yard that might spark your next spontaneous art project?

What area in your universe could use a little playful rearranging?  Something that makes you smile and giggle because it’s unexpected, larger than life or just plain goofy?

Please do join this conversation and spell it out for us!

In Delight,

Frances
