Today is my 20th wedding anniversary!
On a picture-perfect blue sky day Jeff and I tied the knot amid family, friends and a riot of blooming rhodies, wisteria and azaleas at the Washington Arboretum Graham Visitor Center.
Look how young we looked!

After we exchanged our loon rings we danced on the cobblestone patio to a wonderful band headed by our friend, Scott Law.
The whole affair was relaxed, fun and festive. Just think, 20 years ago I was instinctively living by the Delight Detective’s credo of Yes and Yay!
(Ah-ha! Another clue that my past informs the future!)
What a magical kick-off to a two-decade ride of love, humor, art, creativity, music and adventure with my best friend Jeff.
So then, how shall we celebrate our twenty years of marriage?
I learned from the folks at Hallmark that platinum and china are the traditional anniversary gifts. Do we exchange new rings? Take an elaborate vacation? Shower of rose petals maybe? All nice gestures and celebrations, but not our style.
Yes we’re romantic saps about lots of stuff. But we really do think that every day together is the best gift of all and a reason to celebrate. So tomorrow will feel like many other days around Yes and Yay HQ:
We’re having breakfast at one of our favorite cafes, then will come back and putter in the garden, and work a bit. We’ll re-arrange some of the giant letters from our Alphabet Garden to match our celebration!
I’ll spend an hour in my studio noodling with my newest quilt, which I started yesterday in honor of our 20 year milestone. Here’s a first peek at the central block:
Then later on, we’ll cook dinner together and sit out on the deck if the weather is fine, and watch the stars come out. And we’ll do our little happy dance of gratitude, minus the cobblestones, tux and fancy white dress.
For us, it’s the perfect way to celebrate our friendship, doing what we love to do, together.
Wishing you all a day full of love and whimsy and delight,
